Korie Genius

Born in Kingston, Jamaica and raised in Brooklyn, NY. Korie Genius has become a successful Dancehall teacher and choreographer in NYC. Dancing since he was 10 years but has been

dancing his whole life since it is a part of his culture.

Korie, since age 15, has studied various styles of dance like hip hop and specializing in Dancehall and styles like Flexing, Krumping, and Popping. Korie loves to broaden his visions of dance every day and does that by taking classes and training with the best choreographers in the city.

Everything he does revolves around dance. His "9 to 5" is dancing while teaching Dancehall weekly at Broadway Dance Center and PeriDance.

From being a dancer, from taking dance classes from different teachers and choreographers, he got to learn how to teach and his way of teaching from observing them builds his own form.

Korie has been able to create dance classes for Dancehall and being one of the only ones to teach it in NY.

He gets to introduce the style he teaches to new dancers every class who have never taken a Dancehall class before.

It is one of the most rewarding parts of teaching and being able to share his culture with others in the dance community every week. The studios he teaches at have international reach with students coming from around the world just to take dance classes and learn from the very best.

Korie has performed in various venues all around America like CBS morning show performing with reggae artist Mr.Vegas (2010) and has performed at numerous shows around the tri-state area such as Carnival, Michael Jackson 25th anniversary to name a few.

Korie has been teaching children and adults for many years and makes his classes fun and positive, allowing everyone to bring their personality into their dance, and learn many styles of hip hop. He is a growing artist that always strives for the best. His goal is to pass on his passion and unique style as well as making an impact with his dancing and choreography.

Korie was recently was invited to William Paterson University to teach a dance workshop in collaboration with a student dance club, the Pioneer Dancers. The workshop was created in order to celebrate and educate students on campus on Black History Month and how it is important in the dance community.

With black history and culture is infused in Dancehall coming from an African background, it was important for Korie to share his passion for the style while giving something for the students that attended to learn.

An experience that Korie cherishes that was possible for his life of dance was being able to dance in one of Janet Jackson's music video, Made for Now in 2018. It was filled with dancers and where they got to perform their style of dance that related to African dance.

Another recent highlight of Korie's was being able to perform at the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon in early February of 2020. He was able to perform while musical guest H.E.R. performed for her new album.

Korie is very passionate about his craft and this shows through in each class he shares with his students. Being teaching for over 12 years, Korie gets to oversea the new teachers that teach his style of dance being the first to do it in the city.

Students at the schools he teach at have to pick a teacher too mentor with and he loves giving his students feedback and keep his teaching positive to help them grow with the style.

With students that take his class for the first time, even if they don't get anything, it's up to him make them enjoy it and want to come back.

After trying it, you can make the decision to keep going or try something else.

With his dance team Black Gold, with three members, they have been able to travel around New York and perform their style and culture of dance to give more exposure to it in the communities. It's something you have to go for and is something you have to try and experience to see how it works for you.

His goal is to pass on his passion and unique style as well as making an impact with his dancing and choreography. Korie is very passionate about his craft and this shows through in each class he shares with his students.

Korie's goal as a teacher is to share his love of Dancehall and to help all his students feel confident in the style. Being able to travel and teach is something he has started for the past 2 years and has goals to travel and teach around the world.
